Steiger, Unicorns humiliate Challengers

Only a bit more than a month after getting the win in a close 9-8 matchup with Willy Schaub Unicornspitcher Alex Steiger didn't give Schaub and the Challengers the wink of a chance in their second duel at Hünenberg.

Steiger struck out three more than in July's game for a total of 15 K's, taking a no-hitter into the fourth and ending up with a complete game four-hitter.

The Challengers profited in the sixth inning from the only two Unicorn errors to get on the scoreboard with three runs.

Adrian Kämpfer">Adrian Kämpfer and Orlando Balbuena with a triple collected the RBI's.

The C's scored again in the seventh, when Urs Blickenstorfer drove in Schaub, handing Steiger the only earned run of the game.

The final inning was also the only one in which the Challengers' pitchers and their defense prevented the opponent from scoring.

Thomas Blank, Oliver Labhart and Kämpfer turned a 5-3-2 double play, before closer Thomas Burger ended the game pitching a groundout.

Starter Schaub took the loss after giving up six runs on five hits and six walks in only three innings.

Balbuena relieved, but wasn't backed up by his defense and gave up five runs, four of which unearned, in the fifth inning.

With this third loss of the Playout Round, the NLB-team were forced to win the second game of the day to obtain a mathematical chance of avoiding the playout series with the second best team of the 1.Liga.

Game notes
The 15 strikeouts tied the franchise high for a single game, last accomplished on Sep. 3, 1995 against the Bern Cardinals... Slugger Blank recorded a career-high three strikeouts.
