10Burger, Challengers roughed up and unlucky
The story of Game 2 against Hünenberg can be retold as a short one. The Unicorns quickly got a respectable lead and never gave it up to win 10-7 in the end.Arian Kämpfer hit his first triple of his career in the second inning. |
Burger gave up 11 hits and earned 9 of the 10 runs in his first complete game in the NLB. He also walked four and hit one batter.
His offense was outhit by the opponents 11-7, only managing to get two hits in the first four innings.
Adrian Kämpfer">Adrian Kämpfer was the only Challenger with two hits - a double and his first career triple.
But sometimes numbers can be a bit deceiving.
Burger was not a pitcher easy to hit. His speed was able to impress the opponents, who swung for their luck and took all their chances.
Especially in the first half of the game their balls always hit the defensive holes.
But Burger didn't give up more hits in five innings than in the first one alone. And he also struck out eight batters, achieving by far the best rate for strikeouts per nine innings for Challengers' starters.
On the other side, the Challengers' offense was not bad, either.
Except for the leading batters Chris Hardy and Orlando Balbuena, who both struck out in their first at-bat, all the Challengers got the bat on the ball and made good contact.
But unlike the Unicorns, they couldn't reach the holes in the defense.
Towards the end of the game the guest team started to come back, but it was not enough for a 7-inning-game.
Game notes
Rookie Gerry Obeng hit his first career NLB extra-base hit, an RBI-double in the fourth inning. His team-high 3 RBI's were also his first in the NLB.
