23Challengers finish Flyers in seven innings 23-13
The Challengers tried to avenge their only loss of the season against the Therwil Flyers on May 14, and they did it with a convincing 23-13 win in seven innings.Harry Bregy went 3-for-4 and increased his team-leading average to .556. |
Starter Patrick Zöllig kept the Flyers in check over the first three innings, allowing only three singles and three unearned runs.
His offense extended the lead to 9-3 after the first three frames, profiting from two more errors and five passed balls by catcher Büffing.
The Flyers were able to score twice in the top of the fourth, but again those runs were unearned as catcher Willy Schaub dropped a third strike and wasn't able to make the throw to first base, and Patrick Bosshard threw away a ground ball that would have ended the frame.
The Challengers got all those runs back on a passed ball, a wild pitch and Adrian Kämpfer">Adrian Kämpfer's RBI-single to put his team ahead 12-5.
But the Flyers stormed back and scored five times in the next inning.
Zöllig's defense fell apart as it bobbled three balls and allowed five unearned runs to cut the Challengers' lead to 12-10.
Manuel Schretzmann got two hits in a game for the first time this season. |
But in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Challengers finally started to hit the ball well.
Schaub led off with his first double of the season, followed by a walk to Harry Bregy.
Kämpfer and Zöllig followed with back-to-back doubles that sent Flyer starter Martinoli to the showers.
Bosshard greeted reliever Luki Zwyer with yet another double to put the Challengers ahead 15-10.
But there were still no outs and the Challengers kept going.
Schaub hit a second double in the inning, and at the end of six innings, the Challengers held a comfortable 21-10 lead.
They just had to get three outs and allow not more than one run to finish the game due to the 10-run mercy rule, but the Flyers didn't give up and scored three times, again profiting from two errors, and trimming the lead to 21-13.
But the Challengers were too determined to finish it off after seven innings, so they went about their business and led off the bottom half of the inning with three singles by Bosshard, rookie Oliver Deck, and Wolfgang Laabs.
Two runs scored on an error by first baseman Hügli, and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Schaub for the final score of 23-13.
