11Challengers score 7 runs in 1st, go on to win 11-6
The Challengers were determined to avenge July 23rd's 15-5 loss against the Wettingen Black Knights, and they did it by winning 11-6.The Challengers profited from starter Reto Meier's lack of control and received six walks in the first inning, four of them with the bases loaded, and three of them with two outs.
Reto Meier managed to record only two outs before being lifted for Michael Meier who managed to get Tobias Siegrist to hit into an inning-ending ground out with the bases loaded.
By then, the Challengers had seven runs on the board and they added one more in the second inning on an error by shortstop Santos for an 8-0 lead.
Starter Patrick Zöllig, coming off his worst outing of his career as he allowed 15 earned runs against the Reussbuhl Eagles last weekend, gave up only two hits to the first 18 batters he faced. Consequently, none of them scored, and the Challengers held on to their 8-0 lead through the first four innings.
The Black Knights managed to score one run each in the fifth and sixth innings on a sac fly and a run-scoring ground out, but the Challengers got both runs back in the bottom of the sixth frame on back-to-back doubles by Siegrist and Patrick Bosshard, and rookie Oliver Deck's RBI-single.
Entering the final inning, the Challengers' lead grew to 11-2, and Zöllig managed to retire the first batter.
But after that, things fell apart for the Challengers, and Zöllig's defense committed four errors that enabled the Black Knights to score four unearned runs.
With still one out, two runners in scoring position, and the score 11-6, Siegrist relieved for the first time this season, and promptly retired both batters he faced to end the game.
Game notes: Bosshard had three hits in five at-bats to improve his batting average to .457, surpassing Harry Bregy's .432 for the team lead. He also had game-highs with three runs scored and three RBI's collected. ...Willy Schaub went 2-for-4 and improved to .267, his highest batting average this season.
