The Romanshorn Submarines prevailed in an exciting game that went into overtime against the Challengers' NLB-team.Oliver Labhart> |
Oli Labhart worked seven innings in relief and gave up just two earned runs. |
Hofer's leadoff homer in the bottom of the 10th sealed the 9-8 victory after three hours. It was the only homer hit that day.
Although the Challengers outhit the Subs 14-9, the Challengers' defense committed costly errors that led to six unearned runs. Urs Blickenstorfer alone had three blunders in center field.
The Challengers were first to take the lead. They did it on a throwing error by catcher Friedli and Stefan Eisenring's two-out RBI-single. On the same play, Blickenstorfer also tried to score from second but was thrown out by center fielder Hofer at the plate.
The Submarines were able to score just a single run off starter Patrick Zöllig in the first inning.
The Challengers then went ahead 3-1 on yet another error by pitcher Schiavo who mishandled Harry Bregy's sac bunt that allowed Chris Bülte to score from third base.
The Challengers' offense outhit the Subs 14-9 but still lost on costly errors. |
Both teams scored two runs apiece in the fourth, and one run each in the sixth for a score of 7-6 in the Subs' favor. They added one more in the bottom of the seventh on Blickenstorfer's second error of the day.
The Challengers wasted too many opportunities to score a bunch of runs by leaving a total of 15 runners on base, twice with the bases loaded and no outs.
They managed to score just one run in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-7, and then tied the score on Oliver Labhart's bases-loaded RBI-single with two outs in the ninth.
Labhart (1-2), who relieved Zöllig in the bottom of the fourth inning, allowed just five runs - three of them unearned - on six hits and one walk.
But Labhart was also credited the loss as he served up Hofer's leadoff homer in the bottom of the 10th that won the game for the Subs in a dramatic fashion.
Labhart went 3-for-6 at the plate and raised his batting average to .324.
Bregy had his first three-hit game of the season and also had three steals to give him a team-high 25 for the season.
