Challengers end Eagles season with walk-off win in Game 2

After a dramatic 5-4 win in 11 innings in Game 1 of this year’s Playoff Quarterfinals, the two teams were primed for another close matchup with Adam Greenberg facing off with James Sanders.

The two pitchers delivered and another walk-off secured the Challengers a place in the Semifinals against the Therwil Flyers.

Greenberg, owner of the second-best ERA for starters in the regular season at 1.73, hardly ever ran into trouble for eight innings, not allowing more than two base runners an inning, except for the sixth when he intentionally loaded the bases with first base open.

Sanders, owner of the best strikeout to walk ratio with 22-1 and the fewest walks per inning allowed (1 in 32 IP), went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk, while also striking out one.

By the time he left, his team was trailing 2-1 thanks to RBI-singles by Raphael Strub in the fifth and Yanik Probst in the sixth inning.

The Challengers’ lone run came on Carlos Nepomuceno’s RBI-double in the second inning.

In the ninth inning, Sanders reached with a one-out single to right, followed by a walk to Tobias Siegrist. Robert Sedin’s RBI-single to left tied the game at 3-3, and Saentis Zeller, who had just one hit in the Payoffs up to this point, found the hole between the first and second baseman which enabled Siegrist to come home with the winning run.

Game notes
Siegrist became the first Challenger to score two walk-off runs on the same day.
