Challengers, Martinez power past Flyers 12-7

The Challengers displayed an uncommon burst of power, hitting three homers in an 18-hit attack, winning 12-7 in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Therwil Flyers.

Siegrist
Siegrist goes seven innings for his first win of the season.
Jesus Martinez led the Challengers’ offense with two homers, a double and a single for a total of 11 total bases. Ryan Byrne also homered, a three-run shot in the fifth inning, and Robert Sedin and Eidrys Reyes both added three hits each.

But it started everything else than well for the Challengers as the Flyers got to starter Tobias Siegrist early by scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Taka Oshima lined Siegrist’s first pitch to deep left field for a double and came around on Javier Rodriguez’ RBI-single. Two more runs scored on Sebastian Zwyer’s two-run single for a 3-0 lead.

The Challengers struggled early on against Taka Oshima at the plate, but finally got to him in the fifth. After two walks to lead off the inning, Byrne cashed in and tied the game at 4-4 with his first homer in a Challenger uniform.

After a double and a walk in the same inning, coach Andy Fleischacker summoned reliever Stefan Koller to the mound and he managed to put out the fire by retiring Saentis Zeller for the third out.

The Flyers managed to retake the lead by scoring an unearned run, but Siegrist continued to keep the Flyers’ bats off balance.

The Challengers, on the other hand, put up a big five in the top of the sixth inning on Martinez’ two-run homer and Siegrist’s bases-clearing double.

After seven innings, Siegrist’s day on the mound was done. He finished with five runs given up - two of them unearned - on eight hits and three walks while also striking out five to pick up his first win of the season.

Byrne pitched the final two innings and gave up two unearned runs, and striking out six batters.
