Challengers win 5-3 against Cardinals for 7th in a row

Even though the rain had finally stopped, the field conditions were far from ideal. But that didn't stop the Challengers to come out hard again against the Bern Cardinals in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader.

They came close to scoring a run in the first but some bad decisions on the basepaths cut the inning short. Ryan Byrne tried to score on Eidrys Reyes' single, but was thrown out by right fielder Christoph Beyeler. Reyes tried to advance on the throw home but was thrown out 2-6.

They still managed to get the lead in the second inning when Tobias Siegrist rounded the bases after his single.

Things got even better in the third when Bryan Shemley and Robert Sedin had back-to-back singles and came around on Byrne's sac fly and Reyes' RBI-single to right field.

Sedin and Reyes helped score another two runs in the fifth when Shemley scored on Sedin's RBI-single. Sedin eventually scored on Reyes' third single of the game for a 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals did not show much resistance up until the eighth inning as three runs scored on three consecutive hits and a wild pitch. And all that after a dropped third strike after a wild pitch with two outs.

With one more out to go in the eighth, Byrne took over again, striking out four to end the game, securing him the second save of the day and the fourth of the season.

Game notes
Shemley's single in the third inning was his 300th total base in the NLA. ...Byrne needs two more saves to equal Manny Marchant's single season record of six in 2002. ...Reyes currently rides a 16-game hitting streak, upping his league-leading batting average to .486.
