Challengers drown Eagles 14-2

The Challengers scored early and often against the Lucerne Eagles in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, jumping off to a 6-0 lead after the first inning, and eventually winning 14-2.

Girasole
Girasole pitched five shutout innings for the win.
Starter Andrea Girasole threw five shutout innings for his first win of the season, and both Tobias Siegrist and Robert Sedin went 3-for-5 in a 19-hit attack that left the Eagles helpless and without a chance.

The Challengers sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning against Stefan Haltmeier. Siegrist and Saentis Zeller each had an RBI-single, rookie Eidrys Reyes had an RBI-double, and Bryan Shemley capped the inning with his two-run single.

The Challengers' offense kept going in the second frame, scoring two more times on a throwing error by catcher Marco Limacher and Jesus Martinez' RBI-single, and adding one more run in the top of the third on yet another RBI-single by Siegrist for a commanding 9-0 lead.

But after that, the offense output came to a halt. Haltmeier managed to shut out the Challengers from the fourth through the eighth inning, but in the meantime, Girasole fared no worse.

Girasole conceded only three hits and walked one while he also struck out seven.

Shemley
Shemley collects two RBIs with his single in the first inning.
I felt real good. I could spot my fastball and had a good bite on my curve balls. Girasole said after the game.

Bypassed in the season opener against the Therwil Flyers, Girasole was clearly on a mission and wanted to make a statement.

Thomas Burger pitched three innings in relief, giving up only an unearned run on four hits and two walks, while also striking out two.

Harry Bregy pitched the final inning, giving up another unearned run that was scored by the leadoff batter whom he struck out but reached on catcher Siegrist's dropped third strike.

The Challengers added five more runs in the final inning off reliever Jerome Müller. Three singles and two doubles did all the damage, capping the Challengers' run total at 14.
