Challengers waste runners on base, lose 7-5

The Challengers lost the second contest of Saturday's doubleheader against the Zurich Barracudas 7-5 thanks to a poor execution with runners in scoring position.

Siegrist went 2-for-5 but had a big strikeout at the end of the game.

The Challengers went a combined 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position and less than two outs.

The Barracudas jumped to an early 6-0 lead off starter Thomas Burger in the first two innings, stringing together six hits in those opening innings.

After that, Burger managed to stop the bleeding, but his offense didn't start to produce yet, getting only a single run off starter Frank Berchtold on Harry Bregy's RBI-single in the third inning.

The Barracudas got that run right back on Francisco Conlindres' RBI-single for a 7-1 lead, but that was all the Barracudas produced that day.

Burger lasted five innings and ended up with his second defeat of the season.

At the end of the day, it turned out to be enough, but just barely.

The Challengers threatened in the fifth inning, as they batted around reliever Dominic McNulty, getting four runs on five hits, two of them huge ground-rule doubles by Tobias Siegrist and Jose Castillo.

But with runners on third and second and just one out, McNulty escaped the jam by striking out both Thomas Blank and Geovanni Ureña.

Trailing 7-5 in the eighth inning, the Challengers wasted their last big chance as they couldn't cash in with runners on third and second with no outs, and then with the bases loaded and two outs.

With that split, the Challengers stand at 3-3, rounding off a tough start into the season, having played all three Playoff contestants from last season.

The next couple of games should be easier as they'll face teams with losing or equal records for the next 12 games.
