Challengers sweep season series from Frogs

With their second win in Sunday's doubleheader against the Sissach Frogs, the Challengers have moved into a tie for 2nd place with the Bern Cardinals.

The Challengers started the scoring in the first inning as Anubis Benitez scored from third base on a throwing error by pitcher Wiedmer.

They added five more runs in the third inning on Benitez' ninth homer of the season, a solo shot to lead off the inning, RBI-doubles by Thomas Landis and Roger Brunner, and two RBI-singles by Nick Lehmann and Armin Blickenstorfer">Armin Blickenstorfer for a 6-0 lead.

Starter Oli Christen pitched the first three innings for the Challengers and allowed three unearned runs on just one hit and four walks while striking out two. He finished with a no-decision.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Frogs managed to score three unearned runs as first baseman Bryan Shemley couldn't handle catcher Lehmann's throw to first after a dropped third strike. Baier followed with a two-run double.

But the Challengers got one run back in the fourth inning on Joe Cox' RBI-single. They also added two more runs in the sixth inning on Landis' RBI-double that scored Benitez and Brunner's RBI-single. With that run, Benitez has tied Adris Linares' single-season Challengers record for runs scored at 49, set back in 1994.

The Challengers added two more runs in the final inning on Shemley's solo homer, tying his previuos career-high of four homers set last year. Landis laid down an RBI-single for his game-high third hit and the last run for his team.

Christen was relieved at the start of the fourth inning by Benny Räber, who already tossed a complete game in game 1. He pitched three shutout innings to earn his third win of the season.

Landis then pitched the final two innings and also gave up no earned run, although two Frogs scored in the final inning on four errors by the shaky Challenger defense for the final score of 11-5.

Game Notes: Landis' double in the third inning tied the Challengers' single-season record of 17 doubles, set just last year by Benitez. It was his 64th career NLA double, trailing Enrico Zingg's alltime career record of 67 by just three. His double also broke the Challengers' team-record for most doubles a season of 76. ...Chris Palatinus struck out in his 300th NLA at-bat in the 5th inning. ...Lehmann tied his career-high with his 27th hit of the season in the 5th inning. ...Brunner tied his career-high with his 74th at-bat of the year, a ground out for the final out of the game.
