Challengers use big 7-run inning to sweep Subs 11-6

The Challengers scored in just two innings, but it was enough to win game 2 against the Romanshorn Submarines 11-6.

Jose Valdez hits his second homer of the doubleheader and now has 17 round-trippers in 16 games.
Harry Bregy gave his debut on the mound for the NLA-team, and the Submarines tried to jump on him early on. They managed three hits off him in the first inning, and also scored twice. But both runs were unearned as shortstop Joe Cox made a bad throw to first on the first play of the game.

The Challengers put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the first inning on Thomas Landis' RBI-double, Jose Valdez' two-run homer, his 17th of the season, and a passed ball by Pedrini that enabled Chris Palatinus to score from third base.

The Subs managed to tie it in the second inning on Andreas Friedli's solo homer and Jennaro's RBI-single.

But the Challengers came right back and started the bottom half of the second by sending seven batters to the plate before starter Schiavo finnaly managed to get an out. He escaped the jam by getting Bryan Shemley to hit into an inning-ending double play.

That was all the runs the Challengers needed, while Bregy (1-0) allowed just one more unearned to score in the top of the third inning. He pitched four innings for his first NLA victory, giving up five runs - four of them unearned - on 11 hits and one walk. He also struck out four Submarines.

Manny Marchant returned from the disabled list and pitched the final three innings for his second save of the season, allowing just a single unearned run on no hits and three walks while striking out two.

Thomas Landis hit four doubles in the doubleheader, and set a new career-high with 15 in a single season.
The Submarines' last run came on two errors by the Challengers' defense on the same play. Schüpmann, who reached on a walk, stole second and continued to third on catcher Tobias Siegrist's bad throw to second. Center fielder Landis picked up the ball and tried to nail Schüpmann at third. But his throw sailed wide off third base and enabled Schüpmann to score the Subs' final run.

Combined with the Barracudas' two losses against the Embrach Rainbows on Saturday, the Challengers have moved into second place, six games behind the still-perfect Therwil Flyers.
