Leandra Simitovic earned her third MVP award at the Challengers’ General Assembly on December 13 after winning the trophy already in 2004 and 2008. Simitovic collected 20 hits, 3 doubles and 14 RBI’s with a .339 batting average and a .430 on-base percentage and scored 23 runs. She also went 5-7 with a 3.95 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched, earning her also the Best Pitcher award. Simona Cellar walked away with the Best Batter award after setting team highs with 28 hits, 5 triples, a .418 batting average, a .494 on-base percentage and 24 stoles bases and finishing second with 28 runs scored. Brigit Zuber was credited with the Most Improved Player award, while Celine Welti was named Rookie of the Year.

Tobias Siegrist received his fourth MVP award at the General Assembly on December 13, after walking away with the trophy already in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Siegrist led the Challengers with 32 RBI’s, 52 hits and set team-leading marks on the pitcher’s mound with 6 wins, 57 strikeouts and 76.1 innings pitched. He also finished second in doubles with 12 and runs scored with 32. Siegrist was also named Best Fielder. Ueli von Burg set team-highs with 25 walks and a .523 on-base percentage and ended up with 43 hits, 9 doubles, 16 RBI’s and a .410 batting average, earning him the Best Batter award. James Sanders went 5-1 with a 2.29 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched, earning him the Best Pitcher award. Thomas Blank was credited with the Most Improved Player award, while Angel Maduro was named Rookie of the Year.

Construction on the new Heerenschürli has been progressing as planned, and the new field will be ready by next season. The gras has been laid out, the lights and scoreboard are installed and the dugouts are ready. The stadium has a seating capacity of 400, plus standing room for 1’000 more around the outfield.

Das Wintertraining für die U15 Cadets der Zürich Challengers findet jeden DONNERSTAG von 18.00-20.00 Uhr in der Turnhalle Auhof an der Herzogenmühlestr. 53 in Zürich-Schwamendingen statt (Bus 63 & 79 bis Herzogenmühlestrasse). Achtung: Die Turnhalle Aubrücke, wo das Juniorentraining normalerweise stattfindet, wird im Wintersemester 09/10 renoviert und bleibt geschlossen.
The winter practice for the U15 Cadets-Team of the Zurich Challengers takes place every THURSDAY from 6pm till 8pm at the Turnhalle Auhof at the Herzogenmühlestr. 53 in Zurich-Schwamendingen (bus 63 & 79 to Herzogenmühlestrasse). Attention: the Turnhalle Aubrücke, where the juniors practice normally takes place, will stay closed during the winter term due to renovation.

The Flashdancers Softball-Team faced the Wil Devils on Saturday, October 3 at Wil for a last friendly game before the winter break. Playing in slightly different uniforms compared to official games the Flashdancers fought strong against the Devils who finished this year’s Swiss championship in third place. The Devils edged the Flashdancers 7-6 in a close Game 1, while the Flashdancers almost erased a nine-run deficit in Game 2, as the Devils held on for a 12-11 victory.
