Mustangs rally for 6-4 win over C’s

The Challengers didn't find the recipe for success against the Embrach Mustangs once more. Eidrys Reyes led the offense going 4-for-5 and scored a run. The second game of the day has been called in the second inning due to rain.

Ladies arrive in win column

The Softball-Team recorded its first win of the season on Saturday, May 11, as the Challengers held on for an 8-7 victory against the Bern Cardinals. The C's almost blew a six-run lead, but Leandra Simitovic worked out of the jam, striking out Pamela Kellenberger to end the game with the tying run on third base. Simitovic and Simona Cellar delivered two hits and scored two runs each, while Jennifer Montague drove in two runs.

Game 2 was dominated by Cardinals pitcher Monica Alnes and her rise ball, as she didn't allow any hit between the second and the sixth frame and the Cardinals put things out of reach with a four-run fourth inning  to eventually win 5-1. American Macy Morgan made her first start for the Challengers, but was interrupted by a 40 minutes rain delay after the second inning, before a two-run double by Pamela Kellenberger chased her after 3.1 innings of work. Simona Cellar delivered two hits, while Ziegylou Wehrli scored the only run for the Challengers in the seventh frame.

NLB-Team battles, but goes down

The NLB-Team lost twice against the Bern Cardinals on Sunday. The Challengers gave everything to be a tough opponent for last year's NLB champions, but in the end the Cardinals walked away with two wins. Game 1 went into extra innings, as the Cards finished with a seven-run frame to put them up for good, as they posted a 12-5 victory.

The Challengers tried to bounce back, as they started off with a 4-2 lead after two innings in Game 2. But that was it for the C's, as the Cardinals scored 13 unanswered runs to eventually win 15-4. The C's dropped into fifth place with a 2-4 record.

Challengers edge Flyers twice

Finally, also the Challengers started into the 2013 campaign on Sunday, April 28. And it was a successful start against the Therwil Flyers. After honorary member Enrico Zingg threw out the ceremonial first pitch, the C's built an early 5-0 lead in Game 1. The Flyers almost erased the deficit, as they came within one run in the eight inning, but the C's held on for a 6-5 victory. Starter Tobias Siegrist allowed two runs and eight hits with no walks while striking out six in seven innings for the win, while Eidrys Reyes led the offense going 3-for-3 with a walk.
In Game 2 the Challengers won a pitchers' duel in dramatic fashion. Flyers starter Josh Tamba carried a no-hitter into the eight inning, but it proved to be not enough, as the Challengers erased a three-run deficit by scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the eight to tie the game at 3-3. After the C's stranded the winning run on third base in the ninth, the Flyers broke the tie in the 10th frame by scoring the go-ahead run to make it 4-3. But the C's weren't done yet. Rob Sedin and Tobias Siegrist reached base and Jesus Martinez drove in Sedin to tie the game at 4-4. With no outs and runners on second and third the Flyers wanted to walk Francisco Colindres intentionally, but pitcher Adrian Kaufmann's fourth pitch was in reach for Colindres, who sent the ball to the right field wall for a walk-off RBI-single and a stunning 5-4 win. Robert Sedin tossed a six-hitter allowing four runs – three earned – and five walks with ten strikeouts.

The Challengers will travel to Luzern, where they will meet the Eagles on Sunday, May 4.

Ladies overpowered in Eagles sweep

The Softball-Team endured two losses against the reigning Swiss champion Luzern Eagles on Saturday, April 27 in the Challengers home opener. The Eagles proved to be the best team in Switzerland by winning the first game of the doubleheader 16-1, as Corina Casparis belted a two-run homer and Julia Gloukhoff drove in four runs. Ziegylou Wehrli led the Challengers with two hits, while Simona Cellar delivered a ground rule double over the right field fence.

And the Eagles' bats remained on fire, as they completed the sweep with a victory in Game 2. The Challengers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and had several strong at-bats but were overmatched by the Eagles' consistent offensive production, as they erupted for eleven runs in the fourth frame to eventually win 20-3. Sandrine Montandon had a double, while Anouk Lkharrazi, Leandra Simitovic, Simona Cellar and Alexia Zingg had a single each.

The C's will host the Bern Cardinals on Saturday, May 11 at the Klopstockwiese for their next games.
